Ep. 22: Diagnosis Adventures, Stigmas Around Weight, Patient Advocacy, With Sam Varela

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in episodes

We sit down this week with the wonderful Sam Varela. She is a podcast nerd and accomplished comedy producer and our first fan girl guest! We dive into Sam’s medical “adventure” that has spanned her entire life. We talk about the difficult diagnosis and discovery process and how many appointments feel like starting all over again. We talk the burden and cost of being diagnosed with sleep apnea as well as dealing with feeling fatigued and tired throughout the day and trying to find a solution. Sam also shares how being overweight affects the way doctors treat you and diagnose you and the horrible scare tactics that are used. We talk the stigmas and misconceptions surrounding weight gain and the importance of advocating for ourselves.

We also talk the pains of migraines and Andy shares what it was like to have migraines as a child on Halloween and how it was so bad she wasn’t able to go trick-or-treating. Joleen talks about how being bullied ultimately lead to her developing her sense of humor and her decision to have plastic surgery.

Here’s the photo we mentioned in the podcast:

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“I get jealous when I see the Kardashians go to their doctor appointments.”

“It’s privilege to have a diagnosis.”
