(Replay) The wonderful comedian and writer Henry Epstein joins us to talk about growing up and facing mental health and addiction at a young age. He shares how he hit rock bottom and when he was able to ask for help. He talks about the importance of medication in his life and we also talk about how dating someone who you don’t feel judged by makes a huge difference. We talk about anxiety medications and the inevitable trial and error, and the many levels of anxiety. We talk about sobriety and how as performers we aren’t always taken seriously and the challenges this can cause. We share the importance of therapy and the importance of friends and family to be supportive and to have empathy.

Ep 47: Life, Death, Love, Mother’s Day and Delegates, with Bin Lee

This episode we are joined by writer, filmmaker and author Bin Lee, to share a different perspective on Mother’s day. Andy and Bin connect and compare experiences with losing a parent at a young age and Bin shares the heart-wrenching story of his families journey with his mother’s breast cancer. We talk about grief, family and the difficult choices we have to navigate. We talk about the importance of therapy and the universal state of denial that people are in regarding death. Bin is an amazing person and I’m so glad we got to hear about his wonderful and supportive mother who helped make his dreams come true. He was open and honest and we are so appreciative of his willingness to share. Bin offers some advice and recommends the movie “A Monster Calls” for a great perspective on grief and loss and we talk about the complex emotions surrounding taking care of an ailing parent. Xchel Hernandez joins us today to talk about video game addiction. He is a Comedian, writer, director, and wonderful husband to Joleen. We hear his origin story, and how the addiction escalated as time went on to as much as 40 hours a week or more. Xchel shares with us how playing could be incredibly social in its own way, and how he was even married once before inside of a video game. Joleen has a lot to say about this! Xchel talks about how he was finally able to break the addiction and how his priorities and perspectives have changed. He has discovered and implemented new tools to combat addiction and to follow the goals that are more important to him. We also talk about how our cell phones have become a new source for video game addiction as well.

Xchel leaves us with some words of wisdom and the techniques that worked for him to defeat his video game addiction!

Improvisor and poet Avi Silver joins us for part 2 of this special 2 part Marfan Awareness Month series. Avi shares his diagnosis story and a quick family history including how he is a triplet. His Father and Sister also have Marfan Syndrome and we talk about how different Marfan Syndrome expresses itself even within the same family. Avi and Andy compare back brace stories and commiserate together and Avi talks about having osteopenia (weak bones.) Avi shares his harrowing aortic dissection adventure involving an emergency plane ride and a heroic supportive family. Avi’s mom is AMAZING. Avi talks about having 9 eye surgeries and several retinal detachments and shares another crazy story, this time about his vision, including being told that he may never be able to read again. Avi talks about improv, poetry and his desire to try standup comedy, which he absolutely must do! We ask Avi some personal questions and get some amazing insight and leave with an inspirational story!
